Dr. Nora was very kind, understanding, and sympathetic during my very first visit. The x-ray technician (whose name I do not recall) was also very kind and patient with me. It had been a couple years since my last dental visit due to moving states, and a sore back molar is what brought me in. I had a significant cavity that went below the gum line, so Dr. Nora recommended having it pulled. I saw the oral surgeon, Dr. Chu, a couple weeks later. For me, this was a traumatic experience. I've had teeth pulled by other dentists before (for braces as a teen, and then my wisdom teeth), so I'm no stranger to it. The doctor barely spoke a word to me, and I felt like I may as well have been unconscious with the lack of attention and bedside manner. With no warning, he went in aggressively with the anesthetic shots (which is fine, I don't mind shots, but a heads-up maybe? Little pinch?). I figured he would then leave me for a bit for the numbing to take affect, but within seconds and without warning, he grabbed onto my tooth and began yanking. Luckily the numbing HAD kicked in, so I felt no pain, but the experience was terrifying (and, thankfully, brief). I barely made it out of there before having a sobbing panic attack in my car that sent my body into shock. Yes, I know that sounds dramatic, and you don't know me, but trust when I say this was out of character for me. I disassociated for two days following this. It was intrusive, unnecessarily brutal, and violating. So why the four stars?! Amber. At my initial appointment, Dr. Nora also recommended a deep cleaning. I had my first session of that with Amber today, and to say it was redemptive is an understatement. I let her know right away about my prior experience, and she focused empathetically on what I was saying. I asked if she could just let me know what she was about to do, not necessarily a play-by-play every second, but just a general summary would be good. She said, "Well that's great, I'm a chatterbox!" And it was true - but the friendly conversation was engaging, and it completely distracted me from the deep cleaning procedure. With no anesthesia at all, I had basically zero discomfort, and it was over and done within 30 minutes. She explained each step to me, and she told me what to do if it got too uncomfortable or painful. Amber is a true professional who takes her job seriously and cares about her patients. For the first time ever, I'm actually looking forward to going back and seeing her again! It wasn't all great news about my overall oral health, but she gave me advice and instructions in a kind and non-judgmental way. She was not patronizing (I've had hygienists before insist on demonstrating how to brush your teeth to me...okay rude?), and she gave me hope that my situation can and will improve. After my tooth-pulling incident, I was strongly considering trying to find a different dentist, or never going back at all and letting fate decide what happens to my teeth. But Dr. Nora and Amber have redeemed this place for me, and now I'm going to stick with them!

What is the Mouth-Body Connection® ?

The Mouth-Body Connection® refers to the link between oral health and overall health, and the role that the harmful bacteria and inflammation in our mouths play in chronic, systemic disease. That’s why it’s time we talked about more than your teeth. Our office prioritizes your overall health as it relates to your oral health. When we care for your smile we’re also looking out for your entire self.
